Recently, I was reminded of what is probably the best back-handed compliment I’ve ever received—that I’m “relevant enough”—when my friends and I were invited to three events across two boroughs this past Saturday, all of which started at the same time. As we figured out logistics and outfits and timing, the idea was floated that we document the night here as if it were a part of Curbed’s The Look Book series. Ipso facto, we bring you today’s piece.
Now, you might be wondering how we managed to do it all, and I’m here to tell you…we didn’t.
Before the night even began, one of our three parties was canceled. It was a bummer but at least it would allow us some more flexibility with our timing, right? Of course not. If you’ve never had to figure out the fastest way to get from Murray Hill to Bushwick, it’s the Williamsburg Bridge when there’s no traffic. However, we found out the hard way that there is always traffic getting over the Williamsburg Bridge.
All of this is to say that while I originally planned to bother the guests at three different parties with nosy but non-invasive questions, I ultimately only managed to disturb the peace once—and yet, somehow, it was more than enough.1
Please enjoy my first foray into real-time interviewing, and take this as a sign to make a list of silly questions with your friends to ask strangers the next time you go out because it’s really fucking fun.
Who are you wearing?
Kim: Fashion Nova. They tried to deliver it three times while I was in Florida for Thanksgiving and I thought I wouldn’t have anything to wear tonight.
Teddy: H&M—I’m ashamed to say it.
Sylvie: ASOS!
Hannah: Nuuly, TJMaxx, my mom's closet (don’t tell her I said that), and my namesake’s earrings.
Kayla: I’m actually wearing—I don’t know the designer—it’s from a vintage store in Cold Springs from 2001.
Skylar: Olivia Rodrigo merch, Mango blazer, Zara jeans, and Vagabond shoes.
What’s your go-to party story?
Rusty: One time I met—ok, I didn’t meet, I saw—I saw Ariana Grande at Whole Foods in Boca Raton. She was checking out at Whole Foods!!
Charlie: When I moved to Seattle.
Will: I was at a karaoke bar, and we got a private room, and everyone’s doing funny songs. I decided to do a solo to “Don’t Stop Believin’” where my voice cracks in the middle of the solo. I took a shot and did it again.
Blair: My 40 hours alone in the desert.
Eimibell: I went to brunch and I was late and I tried to keep up so I drank 15-10 mimosas…it didn’t work.
How do you typically leave a party?
Jamie: I’ll try to find the host, hug them, and dart out. I already have the car ready. I hate saying goodbye—it’s so awkward so everything has to be already ready for me to go.
Jason: I give the host a kiss on the cheek, I thank them for the invitation, give them a warm hug, and then leave.
Will: I leave with a lot of hugs, a lot of drinks, and typically by making sure everyone knows I’m leaving.
Daniela: Irish goodbye.
Kayla: Irish exit.
What celebrity would you most want to party with and why?
Emily: Taylor Swift because I love her. She’d be fun! She’s a hype girl.
Lawrence: Jack Nicholson when he was in his heyday—like the 70s and 80s. He just seems like the coolest fucking man on the entire planet.
Hannah: Jacob Elordi won’t leave my mind right now. I don’t feel like I need to justify that. I just want to make my neck hurt…from looking up….because he’s so tall.
Eimibell: Adam Sandler because he’s very funny.
Skylar: [pained noise] Right now, it’s Paul Mescal and Ayo Edebiri.
What color are you always drawn to?
Kimmy: Green, it gives me nature vibes and is the color of my eyes.
Charlie: Green because it’s earthy.
Sylvie: Pink because looks the best on me and makes me happy.
Zac: Neon green, neon blue, neon anything. I always wear patterns. Normally I’m always in a fuck yeah shirt.
Daniela: Red. I think it makes me feel good about myself.
Kayla: Pink and I don’t know why—I hate it.
What is something you own two of?
Jamie: Two pairs of leggings from Aerie. They were so soft and comfortable and every day after work, “I was like where are my Aerie leggings?” I don’t like sitting on my couch without pants—I don’t like it being just butt to couch.
Will: Do tattoos count? Tattoos—my first one is a play pause button on my shoulder.
Liz: Good going out tops that might get stained.
Eimibell: Black jeans. Any time I buy a pair of black jeans, I buy two.
What is the number one thing you can’t live without?
Kim: A good set of bed sheets.
Teddy: My dog, Bear.
Charlie: A pen and a notebook.
Daniela: My dogs, Luna and Loki.
Would you rather have toes made out of fingers or fingers made out of toes?
Emily: Toes made out of fingers because I could cover it.
Jason: Fingers made out of toes.
Zac: Toes made out of fingers.
Liz: Toes made out of fingers.
Do you know your astrology and does it make sense?
Rusty: I’m a Sagittarius. I feel I'm very Type A and I feel that’s very Sag. I’m a planner, too. I’m also married to a Sag and that makes sense. Sometimes I want to be the leader but then he wants to be the leader so it can get tense…but it makes sense.
Teddy: I know it but it doesn’t make sense. My sun is Aquarius but I'm not an Aquarius. My moon and rising makes sense. I'm all air—I’m a Gemini moon and Libra rising, and that makes sense.
Skylar: Yes and yes. I’m a double Virgo which makes a lot of sense and I'm a Cancer rising which lately has made a lot of sense.
Are you a Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, or Samantha?
Kim: I’m told I’m 50% Miranda, 50% Samantha. I'm on my shit but my shit is crazy.
Sylvie: I’ve heard I’m a combo of Samantha and Carrie.
Blair: Carrie—no, not a Carrie! A Charlotte.
Skylar: I’ve never seen Sex and the City. [Liz: She’s a Miranda but like a fun Miranda.] Is she the one that ends up gay? I’m her.
Earth, water, air, or fire?
Kimmy: Fire.
Jason: Fire.
Lawrence: Fire.
Zac: Fire—definitely fire.
Liz: Earth because I am an earth sign.
What’s your favorite question to be asked?
Kimmy: What’s my most embarrassing moment? [She wouldn’t tell me what it was when I asked.]
Lawrence: What my name is? [Turns out his name was Ben.]
Sylvie: Anything related to psychology because I majored in psychology. [I asked for her favorite psychology fact.] There are seven different types of defense mechanisms.
Blair: What’s the last good book I read?...Or if I have a restaurant recommendation…or anything about my dog?
Thank you to Kim for letting me bother the guests at her party and to everyone there willing to let a total stranger ask them questions!!! Kim is an amazing photographer (here’s the proof) and everyone should hire her immediately!!!
A major thank you as well to Hannah, Liz, Blair, and Skylar for coming up with these questions and a number of others that will rightfully stay in the drafts.
